MOUNTAIN HOUSE

The true star of this home is its setting, perched atop a hill with 360 degree views overlooking the Catskill and the Berkshire ranges. The project required extensive renovation to highlight the landscape from nearly every room stripping away a fussy and overly formal interior making way for the expansive runs of open space, concrete floors and reclaimed wood beams.

The mudroom became the workhorse of the house after we pulled out walls and opened the floor plan. With fewer built-ins elsewhere, we carved out a large portion of the existing garage to create a hardworking zone that could handle everything this family needed. The space now includes a mudroom, powder bath, laundry, and generous overflow storage, giving the house the functionality it was missing while keeping the rest of the main level clean and open.

Even with the home’s concrete, stone, and wood foundation, the clients wanted the spaces to feel relaxed and welcoming for their two girls. We kept the palette neutral but added small notes of whimsy through vintage rugs, softer upholstery, playful materials, and gentle color moments. These touches balanced the industrial edge of the architecture and gave the girls’ rooms a warmth and personality that feel right for a family who wanted a place to unwind and make memories together.
